Crack and cavity on lower unit

So when I purchased this boat I guess there was some water in the lower unit it froze and created a crack. I put some of that putty steal stuff hoping it would keep everything intact but last week it all came out. Now as a temp fix I’m going to try to put in some JB Weld and fill this hole so that does not affect anything because it’s at the very front of the lower unit but as far as aerodynamics I’m sure it’s affecting it. My other concern is it’s going to fill up with water in the winter time so any suggestions out there besides paying a professional to do this. I’m thinking of getting some aluminum brazing rods and pretty much melting and filling in this 3 inch by 2 inch hole That’s about an inch and a half deep. I do have a spare lower unit but the skeg is not the best so I would like to avoid using it.
