Just found out I have a crack in my motor after a tune up. Mechanic says I need a new motor. Have a 1993 175hp Evinrude. What is the best thing to do cost wise? Get another motor or get another motor head. What would you do? Suggestions very much appreciated.

Where is the crack? what caused it? if it is in the crankcase, you may be able to epoxy it. If it is on the head, you may be able to get a new or used cylinder head.

I'll find out. He said it was about a inch long and gas was coming out near the spark plug. But I will let you know for sure exactly where it is when I find out. He is going to check it again to make sure nothing else is wrong. Going to do a compression check. Thanks

Has to be on the head then. Water jackets surround the cylinders.

Re: Crack in motor power head

Well, I got lucky. After the compression check, he checked the power pack and realized it was not working. Replaced it and and reconnected a wire and it started running great with no leaks. He said the little crack is not causing any problems. Apparently someone marked the crack and thought the head was cracked, like he almost did, but did'nt check the power pack. So far I'm still in the green. Paid a thousand dollars for the boat, tandem trailer, and motor. Will take it to the lake tomorrow hopefully. Wish me luck. thanks again for your help.
