Re: crack under prop

Hmm...do you mean a crack in the gear case? If so, that's a problem. It would cause the oil in the gear case to leak out. If that happens, you'd soon be without an outboard.

What model and year is your engine? You may be able to buy a used replacement at something like a reasonable price.

But you're going to have to correct this.

Hi,
It depends a great deal on where the crack is and how badly its cracked. Is there any oil leaking/ water in the oil?.

Where abouts in Plymouth are you from, I left when I was 21, spent all of my spare time on or around The Sound, I was a member of Mayflower sailing club & worked my summer holidays at Fort Bovisand.
Good times!!

If the crack is in an area that doesn't get much stress, JB Weld might be a cheap fix to keep it from leaking. Costs about 4-5 bucks at any auto parts store or Wal-Mart. I used it once to fix a leak in the case at the top of the skeg. Put on several coats and feathered down the edges and you couldn't even tell it was on there. That was 6 years ago and it's still holding.

Re: crack under prop

it SHOULD be the same fuel adapter-if it plugs in and seals it'll be ok.Check you've got oil in the lower unit and it's not all been cleaned off by the previous owner.Replace the oil as a matter of course (use hypoid gear oil for this).
If that's the case, JB weld should be fine in my opinion (someone correct me if I'm wrong!). There were 2 types of JB weld available in the UK-if you can get the one that takes longest to set it's stronger, but I'm not sure both types are available now.
