Is there an easy way to check to see if an engine has a cracked block or has been damaged due to improper winterization? Would you be able to see something when you did a test drive?
Thanks,

Re: Cracked Block

If it's cracked your going to have problems right off.
your bilge may fill up with water...
your engine crankcase may fill up with water...
you may have 1 or more cylinders hydrolocking...
Where the crack happens will determine the fate, and you'll know soon after firing the engine if you can even get that far.

Start it up on muffs and let it run for a while and keep an eye open for leaks, or the oil filling up and turning milky.
Don't just stick the boat in the water and hope for the best.

dgs119,

I moved this over to the I/O and inboard forum as you'll get better and more responses here. The Boat section is for non-engine topics . . . ;)

Re: Cracked Block

If you have a cracked manifold then you can put a new manifold on ,you have a cracked block it's a anchor period.

This might start some verbal back and forth and i don't care.

Look to the casting plugs any popped that you can see. There are a few that you can't see.

Popped casting plug, or one that isn't painted over is a signal that someone replaced one, or the block froze.

Cracked block means a new motor or used motor but don't keep that motor.

Re: Cracked Block

Muffs is one of the names for the flushers/micky mouse ears/ or what ever you want to call them that covers the water pickups on the drive so you can put water to the raw water pump and the engine while running the engine out of the water.
If you have run the boat out of the water for over 15 seconds, then you need a new impeller and possibly pump housing because the water keeps them from overheating and destroying themselves.

BTW, what make, model, year, manufacture, etc engine and drive do you have.?
