I recently bought a 1971 Sea Wind with an OMC V-6 3.8 Liter GM motor. The block is cracked. Can I use a block from a 3.8 liter Buick car engine to replace it? If not, why not?

Re: cracked block

You can use the block, you just need to transfer all the parts over from the old engine. Distributor, intake, carb, alternator, pwr steering pump, waterpump, starter, etc. (did i miss anything guys?) Basically every bolt on item. The cam will probably have to be switched because i doubt that buick engine has a heavy duty rv/truck cam. You need marine freeze plugs too. I've heard some people say you need to switch the crankshafts, but i'm not sure about that. I don't think it would be that big of a deal, but maybe another forum member has some more input on that. While you're at it, put a new coat of marine engine paint on everthing.

Re: cracked block

Is the 3.8 the original engine? I didn't think OMC started using the 3.8 until the early 80s. Check the year to be sure. They switched over to the 4.3L in '85 or so.

Anyway, if it is the 3.8 that OMC used in the early 80s, it is NOT a buick, it's a Chevy 229. You should be able to use an auto block fine, but you will need to replace the 'freeze' plugs with the screw-in type (I think they are bronze). Also you'll have to use the marine cam (or get an aftermarket cam designed for marine use - call Crane and they'll help you out), intake and exhaust manifolds, carb, and all external parts like the distributor, fuel pump, alternator, etc etc.

Have fun!

Tom
