1 have a 1970 merc 165, inline 6, gm250, and i have water in the oil- looks like water coming out the port side(hard to see where exactly) what kind of repair/rebuild estimate should i expect? is this engine worth the rebuild? is there a chevy i/L6 swap for this engine? can i weld the block? or is that a bandage on a bullet hole? read some other posts on the 165 but need some more guidance- thanks for any help.

Re: cracked block?

Pull the head and inspect the gasket. Look for spots of wear between oil passages and water. It's easy for a head gasket to go on an I6, the planed area is so long it's easy to warp. You say there's water coming out? Do you mean outside the motor? Another sign of a bad head gasket.

echoing a very common theme here: did you check the manifold? The I-6 manifold is very prone to cracking from heat stress. Look for vertical cracks in the manifold's exhaust passage walls, usually fairly close to the central intake port.
