I just bought a Bayliner and it has a cracked block. The boat is a Bayliner Capri 3.0 liter Lumina Z34. The engine has stamped on it GM 86. The valve cover say's Model # 302AMARJ and also say's model # 98542.Is there a car engine block that I can use to replace the block or do I need to use the same kind of block.

Re: Cracked block

if your gonna replace the engine, replace it with marine engine, and only use marine parts, carb, starter, etc....

Indyrick,
Not impossible, but hard to crack that engine.Came in 2.5 and 3.0 sizes.Used in many US Postal vehicles.Just not recently.
Why do you feel you need to replace it?
Any water in the oil?
External leakage? (into the bilge?)

DHP

You can see a crack between the two middle cylinders. The engine had already been taken apart.Any suggestions as to where to find a new block? I live in Indianapolis, Indiana

Re: Cracked block

I second “Any automotive block will work.” About every two weeks someone posts if the can use a auto block. There is some things you have to change (cam etc). Don't feel like typing all again. Do a search here and will come up with a list of what you can and can not use from the auto world. Again though a block is a block. There is no difference.

I too had a cracked block. f_inscreenname's
advise on the subject was invaluable and the automotive engine block I have now works perfectly. :D

Look for the topic titled "Help I need mechanics and lawyers". There are detailed explanations on what needs to be taken off your old block.

Where does it say Lumina Z34? If i'm not mistaken, your current engine is from an automobile. When you replace it, be sure that the existing parts are marine grade. Probably has a car starter, fuel pump, water pump, etc.
