I have a 350 GM in a bayliner and the block is cracked. Can I go back with a regular 350 block? And put everything from my old motor back into it? If so, what (if any) modifications will need to be made?

Re: cracked block

Your old motor is a "regular" block. The only difference between it and the ones that roll around on 4 wheels is what gets bolted on around the block. When you go looking for a junkyard block, the only significant difference you will find is the number of bolts holding each main bearing cap. Either the 2 or 4 bolt caps are acceptable for low RPM, low HP use. If you run more than 5,000 RPMs or more than 300 HP, it's better to have more bolts.

--- Remember, my advise is worth exactly what you paid for it!

For what it's worth. Is it cracked from water freezing? Can you see the crack on the ouside of the engine? If the answers to the above are yes, you might want the clean area of crack (wire brush, acetone, etc), drain engine of water, and epoxy (two part). It has worked for me on two occassion. Might be worth a try.

Re: cracked block

They have this nice new nickel rod that allows you to weld cast iron with ease these days, the question is; is that crack you see the only damage? You will have to remove it to weld it, but it will be cheap if you can tell it is a single crack and accessable.

My friend went and found a 400 block, and good choice of cam, heads, and intake and ran his 305ci from 47+ to 74 mph. OK, the cam was really big on this one, but it worked. I only know of having to use the exhaust, cooling system, ignition, and your supposed to use the carb; everything else can be automotive, just stay with a marine cam to make things work in the end. And make sure you have no fuel leaks and your ventilation is good back there. Nice time to upgrade!
