I have three bomar hatches on my boat. When I pulled the old girl out of winter storage, (steel building, with concrete floor) two of the three hatches were cracked.

The cabin was bone dry and nothing else was wrong. How did this happen? I am going to glue them up temporarily but can you buy replacement glass?

Any ideas??????

strange one...maybe seals were waterlogged and
ice cracked glass? a scorned woman???
should be able to buy safety glass and have it
cut to size in most hardware stores. may have to
drill out rivets and re-rivet or screw back
together depending on how frames are made.
good luck,
M.Y.

MY,

I should state that I believe this is plexiglass (not real glass), is there anything special to bomar designs other than a tinting of the plexiglass that would prevent me from doing just what you outlined?

Re: Cracked glass

The plastic is pretty thin on those hatches. They usuall get cracked when someone steps on the corner of it.The plastic may also crack with age if not properly cared for.I am having sunbrella covers made for my hatches. The plastic can be replaced but the tough part is getting the old one out in one piece so you can duplicate it.Bromar also sells the entire hatch lid but I think you will have to have the plastic fabricated if thats all you are going to replace Charlie

oh, cheapo/thin plexi? same proceedure, diff.
medium is all. yet one more mfg. cost cutting
downgrade....
if current plexi is thick enough, if you replace
with real glass, it will last forever, never dull
or scratch etc.
haven't priced custom cut safety glass lately,
so not sure if it's cost prohibitive.
the roto-zip drill/saws are best to cut plexi ;)

Took a look at the replacement hatch. They are pretty proud of these. A couple of hundred bucks is way to steep. I will have the plexiglass cut locally as I can't justify the replacement costs.

They went together, and dang it they will come apart. I got some good advise from an endevour sailboat forum.. 5200 black.. :D

This site maps it out pretty well:
http://www.yachtsurvey.com/WindowRepair.htm

Re: Cracked glass

Hello, Use genuine Lexan, not cheap thin Home Depot grade plexi. The Lexan will hold up much better. They use thick sheats of this stuff to bulletproof things. Need I say more! :D

Pointer, I see they caught a State record buffalo carp there in your hometown, 73.1 lbs not bad.

Neumanns,

Yea isn't that something.

After they weighed and measured that beast it dropped over 15lbs of spaun on the table. But the record stands and it is still quite a fish to be hauled out of that lake... :)

FYI: Replacement "LEXAN" glass, $12.50 each at local glass shop. Yippee, I can eat this week! :D
