1985 40 hp e40elco ...Baught this motor the other day for a real steal ...because it has a title and excellent compression and runs really well....the problem is. That the lower unit has a big crack in it and leaks oil ....is it fixable or is so scrap now.....and the prop shaft is hard to spin ...I'm guessing that's due to bearings being rusted ....what do y'all think

Freeze damage due to water inside. But I don't know offhand if that area is where the gear oil is or another cavity that is supposed to have a water drain hole. Probably can be welded if the latter.

However you indicate there may be rusted gears & bearings. That means R.I.P. unless you can find a good used lower unit.

EDIT: You say it runs? Perhaps it isn't full of rust after all. Further inspection required.

Yeah I have not opened it up ....probably do that tomorrow ....the motor runs really well in neutral....and the shifter works and goes into forward and reverse .....but the prop shaft is really hard to turn in neutral
