I have a 1971, 135 hp mercury motor straight six that will not shift into gear.A mech told me there was a crack in the lower unit but when I drained the oil it didn't have water in it. he said it would cost a lot to repair. So I guess I'm asking for help in removing the lower unit and trying to find a cheap replacement. I don't want to sink a whole lot of money into it.Does anyone know where I might find one or tell me how to repair the one I have?

Was the motor running while attempting to put in gear?If not, have someone turn the prop clockwise slowly while shifting.Does the prop shaft turn?

Did the mechanic show you the crack or have you seen it?depending or where it is , if it is , and severity will determine whether to rebuild .

Re: cracked lower unit

A freind of mine was getting his 90hp Force ready for this summer and found an 6 inch crack in the lower unit. Went right through the lower oil plug. He took it off and had it welded. Weld the oil hole shut and tapped in another oil hole on the other side. Worked great.

Moral of the story, it can be fixed. Also, make sure you keep good water free oil in the lower unit.
