Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

Well just when I got everything up and running, I noticed the starbord exhaust manifold has cracked and is leaking some water.

It is a 1975 OMC 225 V8 and the part number is OEM part #980367. This is obviously not an easy part to find. Any Suggestions?

I haven't even had this boat on the water yet since getting it late last fall. I would like to see if is seaworthy before dropping to much money into it.

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

I'd wager he's got a Chevrolet 307.
My OMC parts book picture does not exactly match any of the pictures on those three sites, Boomyal, but parts book illustrations are not always reflective of real life. He may want to take up the previous poster on his offer.
Keep the Stringer faith. Parts are not as scarce as reported, (just pricey, but not more than Volvo parts) and I really appreciate some of the design features. Mondo tilt is nice and the Tru-course steering is cool, my 23 footer will turn almost in her own length.
The flip side is finding someone to work on one if you don't do most of your own work. They scare most guys now a days. Many say they are junk, but a lot of that is because thay are real old, many have been run till they died, and the Tech is trying to make a living, and really can't charge you for the amount of time it takes to poke around in one of these. There are about 90 seals it seems. It's easier to fix blowed up Mercrusiers. :D If you need a tech, find a JonnyRude dealer and ask around for a old salt.
Good luck
Jon

I have a GM 350 Wouldn't think it would be a tough part to find, but maybe there is an upgrade compatible exhaust manifold system available?

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

None of the links provided have replacement manifold for a 1975 GM 350 V8. Any ideas on some other type of replacement manifold that would work?

Thanks Charlie, any information on switching this over to a center rise part, any gotchas, or price information would be much appreciated.

I am fairly confident someone will be all over this, as I am sure this problem has come up in the past.

It's a rare day you can't find a solution to a question in here.

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

No problems at all.It was an update and promoted much better cooling. It cost about $500 at that time and I am sure it will be more now. That was about 15 years ago.Charlie

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

So to get a better idea of what I am looking at, if I go that route, would be to get actual center rise manifolds, gaskets, and "risers" as well as new hose connections to make up the distance from the manifold to the stern exhaust.

I am new to the marine manifold world, but am assuming that risers are the elbows that allow you to place the hoses that run the exhaust back out the drive.

On my current manifold there is no seperate "riser"

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

OK, I can definitely do that. I do have another question that eveyone is going to gasp at and say dont even try it.

If I were to find some way to use a jb weld mixed with fibreglass or a seal-lock type product to temporarily stop up the little crack and take out the boat to make sure the actual drive itself works under load before dumping more money into it, would this ruin everything?

What do I have to look out for going this route, or what to check before attempting a temporary fix. I realize, this IS NOT the solution, but I hate to spend $500 or more on new exaust system to get it out and realize I need to park it because the drive doesnt work or something.

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

It really depends where the leak is.If it is only external then it is a good idea, but it is difficult to determine if it is or is not.Charlie

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

Great, thanks Charlie.

Here is my idea then. Pull the manifold, do my best to make sure the crack isn't on the inside(guessing this means that raw water from the water chamber in the manifold can reach the chambers where the exhaust is, I am not totally sure on the inner plumbing of these things)

After pulling the manifold, clean the outside of the manifold around the hairline crack down to bare metal and apply mixture of jb-weld and fibreglass to the crack leaving a little bit of the crack exposed.

Then dillute jb weld with acetone(from thier site) to make it pourable and add it to the water chamber and presurize the manifold until the sealant emerges from the part of the crack left unsealed.

Let cure 48 hours, pressure test then put back on the engine.

Piece of cake right? Well let me know if I am loony toons with this plan or not.

Re: Cracked manifold, hard part to find.

Or... for about $300.00 you could buy the actual part and simply bolt it on...
