Re: Craigslist find: Outboard to I/O Conversion...WHY?

Hey guys,

Just found this on craigslist.

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/boa/2698777499.html

W
hat would possibly motivate someone to do a conversion like this? Hard to tell from the pics, but does this even look safe?

Ayuh,... It appears to be a clean installation,...
So long as it ain't a OMC, it might be a cool little boat...
They don't say what motor or drive...

There are a few folks around the wooden boat world who build outboard boats with the engine hidden under a hatch, could be like that.

I've seen pics of one of those here on iBoats. It was a Chris Craft as well. This one wasn't like that though; the ad states that it was converted from outboard to I/O.

Well that is actually a factory install.

In the early 90s when OMC owned all the boat companies they made a few of the QuietRider boats that basically have a V4 2-stroke outboard mounted under a fiberglass cover. OMC owned Chris Craft and Sunbird during that time and I have seen boats from each with this design.

I have never figured why they thought it would be a good idea.

There is nothing to fear on these boats. They are just a typical Johnson/Evinrude motor mounted under a fiberglass panel.

Interesting. The ad says "Outboard Motor but made I-O", but perhaps the guy was confused?

Well, it's not the best picture to determine one way on the other, but it looks like an outdrive to me, not a lower unit....

I think the OP of the CL add was just confused... It looks too professional not to be OEM... and I know CC made boats with that cover...

I dunno' that's a pretty unique looking boat - Almost a real "boattail" for a rear end. It's cool looking. For $3,500 it's worth a look.

"1994 Chris Craft Quiet Rider"

name says it all..... it's OEM and the cover is there to block the sound of the engine

looks just like this one... factory.. Pretty cool idea though, benefits of an outboard + sunpad/look of an I/O.

Actually I think you may have just misunderstood the add as he didn't describe it well... The word conversion is not in the add anywhere.

If you REALLY want to know, give him a call.... might be quite entertaining:)

"Outboard Motor but made I-O"

I'd say he definitely implied 'conversion' by using 'made'... Poorly written ad though, you would think someone with that unique of a boat would be selling the benefits like crazy!

Re: Craigslist find: Outboard to I/O Conversion...WHY?

so he couldn't be referring to when the manufacturer "made" the boat? just sayin

I do agree though I would describe it MUCH better but then I suspect that you and I know a LOT more about boats than the seller.
