Crank Position Sensor

1997 Mercruiser 5.7
The motor in this boat has been replaced before. I am installing a new long block. Both engines had a crank position sensor on them. There are no wires on the wiring harness for the sensor and none in the boat. This is NOT a fuel-injected engine. Is the sensor needed on a carbureted engine? I did not take the engine out, so I do not know if it was even hooked up on the last engine.

No, sensor is not needed.
The timing covers are being made with the capability, instead of make 2 types. Just needs a plug

Thanks. What threw me off was that there is a sensor there but it is just for a plug.

Yeah mine has sensor in there that is not hooked up …not needed on carbed engine

It's a truck motor with truck front cover with a carb

The crank sensor is just a glorified oil plug
