The pulley on the the crank shaft that drives the water pump, power steering and alternator on my 1988 AQ271 has failed! It split it two pieces! Luckily I was only a few miles from my dock and I limped home followed by some exciting docking.

Will an automotive one fit or do I need to get a Volvo one?

Re: Crank shaft pulley for an AQ271

I'm thinking it is a pretty specific piece, but I have never compared it to any automotive 350 version.

I just had mine off to sand and paint. I am not familiar with the Automotive 350's regarding that pulley, but the one on my engine (The 570 is identical to AQ271C there) looks to be specifically engineered for the Volvo Penta AQ271C marine application.

Look at all the holes, they all have to be there. Notice the center hub has a raised part around the center hole on the back side (crank side) to locate/center it onto the balancer. Also notice on the front side of that hub the raised parts on 2 of the larger holes. Those are to locate the water pump housing to the pulley hub from the front side. Then there are the 3 odd spaced bolt holes for the water pump housing attaching bolts. There can also only be 2 pulleys or the water pump will not be able to mount correctly thru that hub to the balancer.

Well, it has a GM part number stamped right on it. I took it to a GM dealer and sure enough that number was for a stock 350 pulley. Unfortunately finding one of those now isn't easy here in the Great White North. Would have to order it out of the US. Ordered the VP one because I "should" get it sooner out of BC.

How goes the pulley concern? Did you find one? If not, just go to any wreck yard, you could find one easily. The small bloc chevy was made until the early 2000, so you can easily find one in pick-ups and big cars like the Caprice. The 305 and 350 are the same engines, so you don't need bother about that. Wreck yards are filled with 90's cars and trucks equipped with this engine, so it should not be hard to find one.
