Hello,
I am working on an OMC, 153 cubic inch, 120 hp, 4 cylinder motor, currently in the process of installing a new camshaft. I’ve got the camshaft in and ready to put the crankcase front cover/oil pan back on. I bought two gasket kits. I noticed that I got donut looking seal that appears to fit into the oil pan where the pulley goes. So, I started to remove the old seal and was only able to remove the rubber piece and the wire band. It appears that the old seal is apart of the oil pan because the metal housing seems to be from the oil pan. I took a screw driver and hammer and tried to pop the metal donut out of their, but it just bent and messed the oil pan. Was I not suppose to remove this seal?

Re: crankcase front cover/oil pan

ok
we need to clarify the terms. the stamped steel cover is a timing gear cover and the oil pan is the pig part under the block.
the oil seal on the timing cover will pop out, not willingly but it will. the only good way to replace the cover is with the pan removed as the rubber tangs on the seal strip between the cover lip and pan lip is impossible to replace with the pan on.
if you have bent the cover it may require replacing. I think the 194 and 250 CID six cylinder covers will fit or you can buy a very expensive one from merc.
if your balancer snout is grooved a speedi sleeve is avalible at about any auto parts store for 10 dollars or so or merc will sell you a balancer for about 260 dollars.
you may try taking your timinng cover by any auto repair or merc dealer to have the seal changed.

Thanks, I will take it up the road to the shop and have them replace the seal.

Rodbolt,

When you mentioned if my balancer snout is grooved I can use a speedi sleeve. This didn't make any sense to me, but after working on the motor today, I noticed the balancer slid on the shaft very easy. I am concerned that it might come off. Now, will the speedi sleeve prevent this?
