I want a second opinion before I drop the tranny about what might be wrong . When I trun it over the starter makes a rubbing sorta scraping metal sound. The engine runs ok but I know its not the starter(second new one) After about 20 cranks the starter drive is messed up. Could a broken or loose ring gear be the issue ?

Pull the starter and look at the flywheel teeth.
See if they are wore down any.
Maybe the starter is not aligned right and missing the flywheel teeth some.

If your killing the starter bendex (sp) its most likely an alignment issue. Of course that could have torched the ring gear. I'd pull the starter and have a look see the best I could before I made the decision to drop the tranny. On the bright side there is a whole thread n replacing the ring gear in the Merc, Volvo, OMC IO section of these forums. Good luck.

BTW nice "Avatar" Promotion ya got there.:):)

Pull starter, inspect ring gear 360 deg also check starter mounting surface for foriegn debree and bolt holes for broken bolt pieces.

Does the starter sound normal during start?
