Crankshaft repair sleeve for lower seals 71 Merc 800 (confused)

Have read quite a bit about these repair sleeves and found a few sources for them. There seems to be two different kinds available from what I can figure out. Not sure which to use.

The Merc service bulletin that has been referred to on these forums says to use an A-86349A1. But I have also read that this sleeve is meant to go over the original sleeve and "do not remove sleeve currently on your crank". Is this correct?

My crank does not have an existing sleeve in place, but does have a "carrier assembly" pressed into the END of the crankshaft.

Another part that seems to be mentioned on these forums is the 78661 sleeve. Not sure of its proper application , whether it installs directly on the crank or over an existing sleeve as in the A-86349A1.

In either case, will the repair sleeve install OVER the carrier assembly that is pressed into the end of the crank?

Any clarification would be much appreciated.

Crankshaft Repair Sleeve.jpgYou definitely want to use the 86349A1 repair kit. This is meant for a crankshaft such as yours and will go right over the O.D. of the crankshaft to provide a new sealing surface for the worn area.

Be very careful when installing, you have to use an appropriate driving device and need to keep it straight, the sleeve is thin and easily deformed. I've had a few that ended up being a bit distorted when installed and was able to get the 'tweaked' area in the sleeve smoothed out by gently tapping on it against the O.D. of the crank.

The sleeve does not interfere with the driveshaft O-ring carrier, but it'll be a lot easier to install the sleeve if you remove the carrier first. A thick paint scraper is the perfect size and has just the right rigidity to knock out the carrier, but you can do it with a screwdriver if you're careful. Drive it out evenly, or it'll be much more difficult to get out. Use a suitable driving tool to press it back in after you've installed the sleeve.

A thin coating of Permatex #3 aviation-type gasket dressing to the O-ring carrier and I.D. of the sleeve will keep salt and other debris out of them and the slight amount of lubrication will make installation easier. A coating of Loctite Blue or Red will work as well, I can't recall if there were any specific instructions in the sleeve kit regarding that. If there are, follow those recommendations.

Recommend replacing the driveshaft O-ring inside the carrier, while it's apart. Those don't get replaced very often!

Note that some Merc crankshafts have a thicker stainless wear sleeve installed at the factory. These sleeves are pressed onto the turned-down end of the crank, such that the O.D. of the sleeve matches up with the O.D. of the crankshaft. Your 800's crankshaft was never designed that way, thus the difference in seal sleeves. Hope that makes sense!

Many thanks for that great bit of information.

I assume then, that the o-ring carrier assembly then reinstalls after the sleeve is in place?

Be VERY careful not to break the lugs off the carrier when you try to remove it.
