Shot in the dark here but.....might it be a Samsung LCD tv that bit the dust?
I've repaired several lately (we have a bunch at work, 32" all the way up to 55") and they all suffer from the exact same problem - one of the capacitors on the power supply board, a 9v 2200 uf 105 degree c one, fails on them constantly as the 9v is too little for the board to handle. The capacitors are almost always bulging at the cap. The symptoms are when you press the power button you get no response from the tv other than the small red status light next to the power button itself stays on unless you pull the plug.
Replacing this capacitor is very easy if you know how to do basic soldering. Replacement capacitors can be found at Radio shack - up the voltage to 25v or so but keep the 2200 uf and temp rating. Those you can't change....Remove the source of power, remove the back cover and look for barrel style capacitors that have bulged or exploded.
I know that your tv is probably different but maybe this post will help someone sometime....
......Interesting. ...... Our main tv, a Sony WEGA Trinitron, is around 10years old or so. Don't see that dying anytime soon.
So unlike the OP, I wish I'd lose a tv so I can get a wide screen. Just can't see replacing good tvs that we already own. Maybe MTboatguy already has one....
Interesting. That's the tv, in the Smart version, that I've been looking at.....
Interesting. That's the tv, in the Smart version, that I've been looking at. Not that I'll be buying one anytime soon. The tv in our bedroom is from when the wife was in college. The pic looks brand new(she's expecting the cord to be cut any day now...lol). Hint on how old it is, I'm 50. Our main tv, a Sony WEGA Trinitron, is around 10years old or so. Don't see that dying anytime soon.
I heard on the news yesterday they're coming out with a 4 or Super HD? Sounds like it's 5 - 10 years down the road. My tvs will probably still be going strong....

Switch to DirecTV!Even worse, Formula 1 will be on NBS Sport Network next year and that is NOT available in HD on my current cable provider.
Hmm. Sounds like you're about as stubborn as I am. However, my stubbornness is weakening. I was at my brother's place a couple of weeks ago watching his 47" LED and came home to watch my WEGA 27" CRT in HD and decided I have to make the change. I hate to do it because at my age, I'm pretty sure the SONY will outlast me and chances are the new widescreen will have problems in a year or two, but what are you gonna do?
Even worse, Formula 1 will be on NBS Sport Network next year and that is NOT available in HD on my current cable provider. I really do not want to make that change, but I really do not want to watch F1 in standard def. Going to be a costly year, I think.
I have the 60" version of what JB has and am waiting for it to go out so I can buy one of then new Sharp 70" LEDs!Note to self, must resist the urge, must resist the urge..........
My brother has your size Sony and had the exact issues you have. For some reason the 60" I have has been better.Well, the Sony Grand Wega bought the farm. ARGH!! That $250 lamp died.
