OK, not sure if I should post this here or in Resto., but I'll start here. Mods, move if you see fit. :)

I'm one phone call away from buying a 20.5' 1969 Aztec. A name nobody seems to know, but after looking at the boat, I'm ok with it. It is a 2 owner boat, the guy that has it now bought it as part of a planned business venture that never came to fruition, and has only owned it 4 months. He has all the paperwork and receipts going back to 1969, including the original bill of sale.

Boat looks way better then I expected. Looks like a well cared for boat that over time became too much for the original owner (now in a wheelchair) to keep and use. He did use it in his wheelchair though (another story).

Engine is no longer the original OMC, but is now a Chevy 350, with the original Volvo 280 (230?) outdrive. Fired up on first turn of the key, and sounded smooth. Solid floors, solid transom, lots of safety upgrades (built-in fire supression system, Mercathode Static Control, and other stuff), complete with all original equip/access., and upgrades like stereo and VHF.

Ok, so my only concern is there was a fair amount of crazing in the gel coat. I'm 90% sure it was the gel, and not the paint. Worst was near the front eye, which I figure was from loading on the trailer a little too aggressively. That was also the only area that should evidence of the hull hitting something. Other areas throughout the boat had crazing, but not everywhere. Is this more of an aging thing, or is this something that will require massive repair? At this point, this boat would be a temporary boat, to get me out of my crappy 16' bowrider until next year when the Admiral wants to really step up to a newer larger boat.

Price for this boat is $1500.

Re: Crazing

Just my 2 cents..
I wouldnt let that crazing stop me from buying @ 1,500
She sounds fairly well cared for, any idea of hours?
More of an issue than the crazing is how many bellows, belts, tubes, impeller..and such that will need replacing from sitting..

The Aztec was made by IMP correct?? Iola Molded Plastic or something very close?

Re: Crazing

I'm under the impression the boat actually hasn't sat for too long. The engine was rebuilt 2 yrs ago (receipts), and the current owner used it about 3 weeks ago. The owner before him (I think) used it until last season, when his health started deteriorating.

Total hours, which would include the original OMC and the current 5.7 was 900 on the hour meter, assuming it still works.

I thought it was made by IMP, but the title and plates on the boat say Aztec Boat Company or the like, so I'm somewhat dumbfounded as to the manufacturer. I've been researching the Aztec name from that era all day, and found nothing other than the IMP Aztec, but after seeing the boat, I'm not so sure.

Re: Crazing

my whole hull between the rub rail to the water line has been painted and has crazing. im not sure if its in the gelcoat under the paint or the paint itself but it didn't stop me from buying my Donzi for $3200 and hasn't been an issue.

i found this excellent example picture of crazing

Re: Crazing

I have had my 1967 runabout for about 10 years now. The entire hull at and below the waterline is cracked. not really crazing, but more like hairline gel cracks- everywhere. probably several thousand cracks.
Above the waterline - nothing.
If it gets worse I will bottom paint, but its never been an issue. doesn't seem to be getting worse.

like yours, it was a low investment boat - so I don't really care about the cracks.
