Hi all, I live in Canada and I'm about to purchase a 92 20' Regal from a friend in the US (Texas actually). He's going to be trailering it up for me, and dropping it off inc. the trailer. Does anyone know what is involved in making a cross boarder purchase? i.e. customs, registering the boat, and insurance. Any help would be appreciated as I'd like to do this all to procedure and not have something come back to bite me. Thanks!

Re: Cross boarder boat purchase

Orangegt,
I don't know about bringing a boat from the US to Canada, but I recently brought my boat down from Canada to the US. The main focus seemed to be on whether the engine would pass emision standards here in the US and whether the trailer would meet DOT standards. The boys at US customs didn't really know what the heck to do with me, cause the boat was manufactured in Quebec and the trailer is homemade. :)
In the end, they just sent me on my way and told me to see the local State licensing agencies when I arrived at my destination. Translated...pass the buck. ;)
I would imagine that purchasing your friend's boat would be simple enough. As long as he has an ownership and registration for the trailer and boat, repectively, there should be no problem. You will need to purchase a plate for the trailer and I believe you need to visit your local customs (usually located at the postal office, although, in TO they may have a separate location). Of course you will have to pay the sales tax and G.rab and S.windle T.ax.
Insurance is optional. While hauling the vessel, it and the trailer will be covered by your auto insurance.
Hope this helps.
Fred
PS...I'm originally from Barrie, now residing in Wilmington, NC.

often it's cheaper to buy motors/outboards etc in canada, since a majority of the marine motors are made in canada, and are priced for the canadian market. If you can get away with not paying customs etc, you;d be alright.

My father and myself have taken many items to Canada.

Some were taken to our camper for our use, and storage in Canada. These have to be declared and documented at the border. (freezer, generator, etc)

Other items were being transported to Canada to be purchased by Canadian residents. (coputers, vacumes, appliances) These also are declared at the border.

With the boat, registration and insurance is taken care of by the new owner, you will need receipts and document showing that the duty, if any, was paid.

hey there you will have to declare the duty on the boat as an import not bad I think its 14% of the boat value GST and pst on part of it you will have to go to ccra at 1 port st and file a registration for the boat to obtain the # and licence the trailer any MTO office will do for that $around 40 plus the pst on the declared value of the trailer make it pretty close to the actual value of the trailer or say the trailer was part of the deal and pay pst on a few hundred bucks your choice register the motor and serial # also at port street the whole process should cost a few hundred to do it right. A word of advice when going to port st plan for at least 1/2 a day as they are really slow

The site you might want to check on is www.riv.com. You may also have to prove to the US Customs that there is no lien or encumberance on boat/vehicle, before they allow it out of their jurisdiction. Goo idea to make appointment with them ahead of time with all the info so they can check it out a few days before you arrive instead of a few days when you arrive.
