Have yet to have to do this on my boat but I had noted from other posts on gen ii cross references as moot 344 or spicer 5-1306x. I'm sure those may cross to other makes.

Unis are all the same from MC1 to current. Merc use a different number from 1996 (0F68000) but that's for the sealed type... (Which I strongly recommend)

How often are you changing them? More than once every 15 years and you're doing something wrong!

Chris, i know you know your stuff, you have been doing this a lot longer hthen me so with all due respect, there are 2 different u joints for gen II units,
865493A01CROSS AND BEARING (2 required per assembly) (Black) GKN Assembly
805536A 2CROSS AND BEARING (2 required per assembly) (Gray) Meritor Assembly

i have 2 units in my basement, one from a 2006 and one from a 1992. the 92 has internal clips and the 06 takes external

The way I checked it out is the 'Centre Socket' for the yoke assembly. It's the same from MC1 to current, therefore, the cross and bearings MUST be the same dimensions. Merc may have changed something else (like cross and bearing manufacturer), but physically, they will fit.

Also, my drive is 2006, and it has internal clips.

Cheers....

That's a great point, the new yoke has internal grooves to hold the external clips, but if there is room to install the internal clips, then using older style is of no issue

"Also, my drive is 2006, and it has internal clips." exactly
so, what joints would you put in a yoke that has internal clips? you can't use the 344's or the 1306 u joints because the yoke doesnt have grooves in them to hold the external clips

I use the Merc ones and stop wasting time trying to source 'cheaper' (read crappy) joints...

The cost of your time to find cheaper joints has burnt any savings you would have made.... And then some!
