Cross referencing parts?

Have a 1979 4cly 80 HP Mercury outboard long shaft with a transom mount swivel that is in bad shape (salt water) Trying to find a used part, since no new ones anymore. There are many on e-bay some that seem close. Is there some way of cross referencing parts from different models?
Thanks

Re: Cross referencing parts?

Thanks Gerry;
I looked at the eBay add. That part number is the same as shown in the marine engine breakdown for my sn, however the part number on my part is stamped with last 4 numbers of -6385. I have checked it twice. I measured the "shaft length" from inside the transom bracket to the fin (not sure what you call it, but is the right point according to an other article). The measurement is about 20 inches. It is longer (few inches) than on the motor I removed (1967 650), which I thought was a long shaft. How do I find out if the shaft I have is standard long or could it be extra long or was my original motor a short shaft? ugh.
What I was hoping for is the complete assemble which includes the bracket. Many on e-bay sell them that way. The part you directed me to mentions the other motors that the 6385 fit so maybe that is my answer to the compatibility question. Seems the most important dimension is the two mounting positions to the motor.

Re: Cross referencing parts?

Ev, Where are you located? I have some parts laying around for a '73 850 and a '771500. One ought to fit.
