i have a merc 700 1977 o/b and on the switchbox two of the wires going to two coils are crossed wile the third which isnt firing because of a bad coil which im replacing today is not crossed.
lower switch box plug ----- to lower coil #1
middle switch box plug ------ to upper coil #3
to top switch box plug ----- to middle coil #2
:(
im thinking that because i had a bad coil on the uncrossed lower one that i might not have noticed that they were firing wrong i will try reversing them today and see what happens i just dont have the manual yet and if someone who does have it could give me a answer on this i would greatly apreciate thanks.:confused:

Re: crossed wires on switchbox?

check the color codes embossed on the switchbox. beside each wire should be the "b/y-r/gr" and that sort of thing. My 60 had this and the manual said merc did this to keep this to a minimum.
