Evinrude, E90MLCRD, i now know it is an 84 model, not an 86. But is it a crossflow or a looper? how about 60 degree LV vs. 90 degree CV? whats the difference, how can i tell? Also, does it have the S.L.O.W. mode protection? Have misplaced my manuals but do have new ones on the way.

I'm thinking looper and no S L O W Mode on that year. Maybe others can confirm!

I'm thinking crossflow 90degree. I believe the only 1984 V4 loopers were 120's, 130's, and maybe 140's.

Its a crossflow. The V4 and V8 loopers came out in 85. The V4's were 120 and 140. The V6 looper came out in 86.

Good luck!

Re: crossflow or looper?

Ok thanks guys!! So put it all together and i get 90 degree crossflow v-4, that should not have SLOW mode protection. Not sure what slow mode is anyway, but it did once act like the description of it. Would cut back to half power and limp along. Shut down start over smae thing, shortly after plane. no warning buzzer. No tach in boat at the time so not sure of rpms, i just wrote it off to bad vro. Maybe a water pump/oeverheat problem instead? What would make it act like that if it does not have slow mode?

You might have lost spark on two cylinders which the VRO has nothing to do with.

Good luck!

Ok, thats good info. Is there a way to bench test or check my power pack or coils while out of the water? If it is clearly explained in the manuals then just tell me to be patient. My replacements are on the way. But since it is a '84 i may have the wrong one on the way.

Maybe i should just crank it up on the muffs and check for spark by the ol' self inflicted electro shock method. Was hoping for a better option. It always did run/idle find, would cut back power shortly after planing off.

I use a WELL insulated pair of pliers and pull plug wires off 1 at a time and put them back on. If you hear a difference and see puff of smoke you have spark.

I found on my 200 Evinrude it works better with rpm a little higher than idle.

p.s. the WELL is for a reason I found out my first pair werent

Eric

Those fuse pullers made for those cylindrical fuses in a building panel work great. I guarantee you won't get a jolt with them.
