Hi, first post, I have a 1976 31 ft Cruise-A-Home house boat with twin inline 6 cylinder 165 HP Mercruisers w/ Alpha 1 , I need new props and would like to replace them with the proper size and pitch verses just replacing them with what is on there. I just bought this boat and I don't know if the props that are on there now are the best ones thanks

Re: Cruise-A-home prop selection

Welcome!

Have you operated the vessal yet? If so did you get a chance to push the throttles to wide open?

The information that is neccessary to determine the correct prop for your boat would be the following;

What are your RPM @ WOT?
Pitch and Diameter of your current prop?
And we already know it is an Alpha 1...

Chances are you are not going to be in the correct RPM range. That is one of the biggest dificulties with house boats. Your motors should be able to achieve 4600 RPM. So you will most likely end up going to a much lower pitch propeller to bring your RPM's up.

Hello,
I have the same boat, year and engines, so I looked on mine and they are 16x15 props. These are original from mercruiser. Hope this helps.

A 15 seems like a lot of prop. I ran a 11" through the calculator. And at 4300 rpm guessing 30% slip. Speeds on a planing boat would be about 19 or 20 mph. Do either of these boats plane?

Hello there allen59, welcome to iboats!:)

Thanks for wanting to help out a fellow boater, it is truly appreciated.:) When possible, before replying to an thread please check the date of the original poster due to if the thread is more than 90 days old like it is here, iboats forum policies likes to consider old threads to be an archive and used as an reference only plus it creates confusion for others wanting to help as well. Please refrain from posting to posts that are older than 90 days. Thank you in advance.:)
