Recently our boat mechanic, who by all accounts is a brilliant guy, did some work on the oil pan gasket seal on my port side engine (counter rotating). After putting everything back together he unfortunately INSTALLED THE SERPENTINE BELT WRONG.
HERE'S THE STORY. 2 weeks ago our mechanic finished installing a new oil pan gasket on my Crusader 5.7 LH engine. We took the boat out the next afternoon for a run and it performed great. However, the very next day we went to take it out again and it began squealing and making a chattering racket whenever it got above 2000 rpm's. Brought it back to port and after careful listening, determined the noise was most likely coming from the raw water pump or the pulley. It got dark, we ran out of light and energy so we decided to cut our losses and get a beer. Got home later and checked my Crusader illustrated parts manual and discovered... he put the serpentine belt on wrong! oops.
My question is: Can rotating both the raw water pump AND the (fresh water) circulation pump the wrong way ruin them? AND: Can it be the cause of that squealing racket?
AND FINALLY: Can I install the belt the correct way AND then hope that the noise might go away and all will be right with my engine?? OR: Am I screwed because I now need to replace both impellers, or worse yet, replace both pump assemblies? I need some good sound advice before I go looking for my mechanic to have a word with him....
THANKS
