I've recently bought a Shetland 535 with a 1972 Crysler 45. Launched it for the first time after replacing the Plugs/Fuel Tank/Battery/ Nearly all Navigation Elecs and after a fair bit of general restoration. Though the engine ran perfectly (impeller pumping fine) in a Water Tank, as soon as I put it on the Sea, it would not Tick Over, and sometimes when engageing gear will stall. Now I know that it has nothing to do with fresh/Sea water, so I'm open to suggestions.

I would check the compression on all cylinders. Low compression can hide itself until engine is placed in water and there is backpressure on the engine.

If compression is good, then check fuel flow to cylinders.

If compression is low, under 100lbs, then do a decarb and recheck compression.

Do you know how long ago the engine had run before you bought it. Could the inner passages of the carb be gummed up? It could also be a stretched or punctured fuel pump diaphragm I could see where it might run good in a tank where you're only idling but, bog down under load.

Thanks for the advice. Out of interest, I believe that the boat/engine, had been parked in a field for at least 2-3 years. I can see where you guys are going with this, and think that maybe the strip & Clean up of the carb has to be a good starting point.
