We have a 70's Sea Ray Weekender. The cuddy carpet is musty, nasty and damp smelling. It is on the walls and ceiling. We pulled most of it off, but we has a few area where it is glued on really good. How can we remove the rest of it?

D

Pull harder...have you tried using a scraper?scraper with a 16oz hammer would most likely do the trick.then just sand down the remaining glue to smooth it out and away you go.if scraper isnt available a not as good tool is an old putty knife.you will eventually knock the blade back into the handle but still works.

I just did this same thing w/cuddy cabin. Some of the carpet was actually wedged between the upper and lower halves of the boat from the manufacturer! As bco says...pull harder, it will eventually come out. I found that if you need to remove the glue completely, a round wire brush on the end of a drill motor makes it a lot easier.

Acetone will loosen many adhesives, but in a cabin the fumes are goin' to kill you. Besides, that, if there was a spark we'd hear the boom from here.

Thom

Re: Cuddy Carpet Removal

G'day Dave, Janette here rigby's missus. Just happens we are both carpet layers, removers and general trouble shooters regarding carpets here in Australia. Big problem if your carpet has been stuck with contact. If you pull too hard depending on what your boat is made of it may pull whatever it is attached too off before the contact will give way. If this is the case we find with carpet that cutting it into really small strips and pulling bit by bit. An alternative to this is as ThomWV suggested is using a solvent product which will help, Just watch the fumes, it will make most glues moist enough to remove, hubby just suggested to test a small patch to make sure it doesn't react to your boat first. Afraid contact is about the best thing to adhere carpet into boats with because it can withstand the salt water. Mate your in a catch 22 position here. Hope this helps. Janette.
