Hello all. Last night I bought a boat package from a lady for 1,000 dollars and its a really nice boat but I had a few questions about it so if anyone knows please feel free to answer!

The boat is a 95 Northwood 1467 tiller and its equiped with a Hummingbird fish finder, a huge live well, water pump for the live well, a Mmin Kota Foot controlled trolly motor, and some more.

Trailer is a 96 shorelander and the motor is a 15hp Mariner made my Mercury I think.

1. will the fifteen HP motor be enough to push this up river? The water travels aroud 7mph here i think,

2. are these boats un common? I've been all over and I've never noticed one like this before,

3. whats the max HP it could handle?

Any help I would really apprecaite it. Thanks.

Even though it's a bit under powered it should get you around pretty good. I had a 14 footer with a 15 hp Nissan and didn't have any problems getting me from point A to point B.

An 8 hp Johnson pushed my 14 footer up the Illinois river just fine...In fact,my trolling motor will also pull the boat upstream.

You absolutely stole that boat. Nice find. I agree it should move around well with a 15HP. I think I remember reading somewhere in a thread regarding Northwood that it's a secondary brand name made by one of the more well-known manufacturers. Kinda like Starcraft made Monarks.

Re: Curious on a boat!

There were a number of Northwoods dealers in my area so I've seen a few. Might not be the same quality as a Lund or Alumacraft though they are still very nice boats. I believe they were built or owned by MirroCraft.

IMO that 15hp will be OK. Although having a boat in the same catagory I will say to watch how you load it with that 15hp. The more weight you put into it the faster performance will drop off. By yourself and some gear it should do fine. Add another person and their gear and you will see/feel a difference. An 18-20hp would be a nice step up. A 25hp should haul a full load w/o a load on the engine!

Some food for thought. I don't know where you are located but in my area that 15hp sells for around $500.00 to $700.00 depending on condition. At the same time I see 18-25hp Johnson/Evenrudes selling in the same price range. Might be worth looking at a swap.

Re: Curious on a boat!

Thank you all. I was offered 650 for the 15hp so I may replace it with a 25 to 30. I've been having trouble finding a long shaft tiller handle but it may be my area. Is it possible to install an electric start myself? If the motor I replace this with does not have one it would be nice to equip it with one...pushing a button is better then pulling a rope!

1ST off, if the max hp for that hull is 25 then it would be unwise to exceed it. Too many liablity issues. Your next questions answer is Yes. Though it is a real pain to find all the parts unless of course you can come up with a parts motor.

Just yesterday I ran across a nice looking 25hp long shaft Merc on craigslist for $600.00 so they are out there. What part of the world are you in? Here in Wisconsin both long and short 25's are readily available used.
