What were they thinking.

A couple of people I know live in a duplex, (upper/lower 5 in a row)
Apparently they got sick of bugs and sap on their cars so they felt the need to cut down the large tree (20 + footer) in the front yard.
Don't know if they are going to do it, but one of them wanted to pull the stump with his truck.. Eek is all I can say. Sewer, gas or electrical lines roots under driveway....... Dunno.

This is also without the owners permission. Wonder what he is going to say? Who knows, he may not care. I haven't checked into it, but we have a city beautification ordinance, where if you remove a bush or tree, we have to plant one. But I don't know if that applies to the rental or residential.

I can only see this going bad from here.

Re: Cut down a tree.

I'm guessing it's going to get spendy for whoever decides to cut it down...... I would think the landlord would never allow it, major liability issues. Unless they dig the stump out and cut the roots, I doubt the truck will be able to pull it out.

Let me know when he is going to pull the stump.

I'll hold his beer while he rips the axle off his truck. :)

I Wouldn't mind seeing pictures of the stump, pick-up truck, and utility lines after this well thought out plan has been carried out.
:D

I also wouldn't mind seeing pictures of what the land-lord does to his Tennant's after he finds out, but they may violate one or many rules about posts here. :)

And make sure someone has a camcorder or video capable phone handy.

Re: Cut down a tree.

We own a tree nursey and pull stumps all the time with the truck. How big around is the stump? A 20' tree can't have but a 4-5" stump.

If worst comes to worst, go to home depot and rent a stump grinder.

Re: Cut down a tree.

If a tree is close to my house It will get cut down when it is large enough to damage my house. The ones that were allredy that big when I moved in get a reprieve. It is so easy to remove a small tree and can be so dangerous to remove one that is established.

We cut down a beautiful Japanese maple this year. I was very conflicted about doing it but the trunk was 1 foot away from the concrete porch floor and the tree was as tall as the house. Those trees are expensive and it likely took the tree 20 years to get to that size. Actually so far I have cut the tree down to 6.5 feet tall. It looks bad right now but I am hoping when all of the chutes growing out of the sides of what used to be major limbs develop it will be full and beautiful again.

Re: Cut down a tree.

I'm with dingbat ... a 20' tree is not that big and the root system not that established. There shouldn't be much problem with pulling it out, might have to do a little digging and cutting. However, if there are lines and pipes, that brings a whole different equation to the blackboard. Hopefully a call to the "Before You Dig" hotline for your area will be made prior to ripping the stump out of the ground ...

If you rent MY property and kill one of MY trees you are gonna leave court with nothing but a diaper, and I will hold a lien on that.

Re: Cut down a tree.

I agree with JB. Somebody cuts a tree off a property they're renting from me, that's going to be the most expensive sap deterrent they've ever seen.

I know in these parts, if you want to cut a tree you have to have a permit. The application for said permit entails a "Arborist"(") to come and assess the tree, the reason why you want to remove it, potential environment aspect and anything else they can find as a reason to say "no". Of course, Florida is a lot different than most states (outside of CA of course). But, that little tree removal would've been a 4 digit fine. That might be the case where you live if you actually have code enforcement under a 'beautification" program.

Re: Cut down a tree.

I'd have to drive by the place to get an exact measurement. Every duplex had about the the same size tree. It's already down, the tree was 20 + feet tall. Well put it this way.

Duplex upper and lower, the tree was taller then the duplex.
If it were my property.. I wouldn't be happy at all.

I think 24 hour surveillance is in order to get the property owners reaction, I bet it will look something like the Space shuttle at ignition!

Tell your friends to go ahead, then call the landlord, and then be ready to take a week's vacation. When you come home, plead the 5th.
