cuts out at mid range

1972 Mercruiser 120 hp replaced fuel pump earlier this year and rebuilt carb. Boat starts and idles fine and top end runs great. at midrange though 2500-3500 or so it will cut out a bit. Don't notice any change in the tach maybe 100 rpm at most. It will cut out run cut out run. Not enough to really cause a problem underway I just know it is not supposed to do that. Have changed the fuel water separator and emptied the old one in a glass jar. No water in the fuel. I do have an inline filter and have not changed it, but it would seem to me it would cut out at full throttle if it was starving for fuel not at mid range.
