First time service on a used boat. Boats are new to me, so I'd like opinions on whether to change the u joints on the CV. The bearings move smoothly (as does the gimbal bearing) but there are minor signs of surface rust around the seals/on the crosses. See the pic and please tell me what you think. Thanks in advance!

If its smooth no hard spots,it will be fine. Is there a grease zerk, some have em ans some don't.
A little surface rust is normal on them.they do live in a damp enviroment.

What shape was the gimbal bearing in, any indication of water in the bellows? That looks more than just surface rust, and it looks like the bellows has been rubbing on the center piece. You don't run the engine with the drive tilted all the way up do you?

Trying to catch up in order. No grease zerks, no water in bellows, gimbal bearing spins smoothly, I've only run her with the motor full down to halfway up when recovering, no cracks just grease lines. I think I'm OK, but please chime in if otherwise. Thanks all!

That to me shows all the signs of serious water intrusion at some time as that corrosion isn't just from damp air. If there is no proof of a recent bellows boot change then I would replace it no matter how good it looks. If those ujoints are smooth then they might be fine for a while or they might start making noise next week. Your call on weather to just change them now.

Like everyone else, I state that is water INTRUSION. I also see the crack that Bondo pointed out.

Quick and ONLY answer to this post is to go and purchase the new assembly (part number 3860842) and replace. With this said you will also need a new pretension sleeve and make SURE the proper procedure is followed to set the rolling torque on the drive gear bearings.

Only way I would only replace the U/J's / Spiders and not the whole assembly on this.............. I am blind and there is not a crack in the assembly / yoke ear ......... I do not know how to or have the tools to set the load on the bearings.

The assembly is actually one of the few items for Volvo's that will not break the bank and they do come in kits where the pretension sleeve is included.

NOTE: If that IS NOT a crack we see and you do decide to only replace the U/J's, PM me and I will let you know the exact part number for those spiders.

Re: CV joint change?

There are NO cracks on the CV, it's just a poor phone picture and the black line is grease. Same goes for the shine on the CV, it's reflection from the florescent lighting. The entire assembly is a dull brown color with a couple of grease and surface rust spots. PM sent on U/J part numbers.
