Hi all!
Im having my merc 140 181 CID 86mod cylinder-head off since I found some water in the oil and cylinders, and I was wondering if there could be something wrong with the head, even if compression is OK (between 125-150) or does that mean that the head is OK?
Will a cracked head fill the manifolds exhaust passage with water?
Ive done a test with gasoline on the manifold, and couldnt see any leak, it would creep by
the riser though.
Im doing all this at home on muffs.
I used a lot of water washing the engine, is there a valve ventilation where water could come in, and would it then get in to the cylinders?
It all looked OK when I took the boat home.

Regards
Affa

Re: Cylinder head questions

Did you shoot water into the exhuast? If so and the exhaust flapper is bad or missing water could have entered this way.

Re: Cylinder head questions

Affa sounds like you found the source of water it is the riser thats leaking water back into the exhaust passage, which in turn is leaking back into the cyclinders through a open exhaust valve, If manifold and riser are good andcheck out o.k. put a new riser gasket in, but first make sure that the mating surfaces are flat and have not warped, If manifold and riser are orginal then you might want to replace them.
