Re: D1-30 Glow Plugs
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD morning,
My D1-30 B would not do anything when ignition and starter button were pushed. Fordham marine of Jacksonville spent 5 hrs. tracing it to the glow plugs telling the engine not to start. Question - Is $75 per plug a fair price....And Can I do the install . Are there any tricks and where are they located exactly ..
THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP
TOM
Ahhhhh...5 hours? Was this a Marine Mechanic who might have seen a diesel before? Diesels are simple. Was the Certified VP tech trained in gas or diesel? Not being a smart ***, this is why you have diesels. If they took 5 hours, I would not let them touch it again. I cannot figure out how you can spend 5 hours unless they had 4 H and 30 minutes of travel time. Now that you feel terrible...this is easy to do. This engine has a problem with the brain frying. Your best tool to have is a volt meter, or you can break down and by a Power Probe III. Greatest tool in the world, Snap on Guy's sold them for $300 bucks, now there less than 100 at Amazon.
As Don said, glow plugs glow. They heat the cylinder to get it started. There are three components to a diesel. Air, Fuel and Heat. So if you are not having anything going, start at the battery, you should have power, its just an easy place to start. Follow the positive wire. Do you have an ignition key to bring power the the engine on? Check to make sure the switch is not shot.Put one probe on the wire going in, the other on the wire going out. Turn your knob to Ohms or the Omega sign. Turn the switch on, it should go to 0 on a digital meter and I forget on an analog meter as it has been so long. Check the solenoid. There should be a small 30A relay. Next go the the starter. Power there? Pull the plug out, Power? Next go to the back of the brain, power there? If so, your brain is probably fried.Your engine should be EVC. Is this in a J-boat? Volvo has an upgrade for the brain. They have had problems with this, one of those secret warranties. The brain does not like water, movement, banging. Good thing they put this in a boat.
Sorry...post pics if you are confused. The 70 VW is more complicated than the diesel.
