Dad Found a Rebuilt Truck 454 for Free.. How to Marinize, or is it worth it?

Hello,

I started a thread a few weeks ago about swapping a 350 for a 454 but this topic is slightly different so I figured I'd start a new thread. My dad can get a rebuilt turn-key 454 truck motor for free. I know for a fact that I would have to change the following:

-Starter
-Alternator
-Distributor
-Carburetor
-Fuel Pump (Electric?)
-Brass Core Plugs
-Marine Head Gaskets
-Add a Bravo Coupler

I have a brand new Delco Voyager EST ignition system, and the 1986 merc 350 to take any other parts that will fit (alternator, carb, more?). Is there anything else that I need to change out to make this engine both legal and practical for marine use? If so, is it even worth it to take the motor, or will the costs keep adding up? Thanks in advance.

if its new id run it the way it is.low horse motor your carb will work from the 350 dist will work 2 from it and the mounts and bell . u will need a flywheel and the exhaust like said. but its not a bad swap to do

Yea, forgot about exhaust manifolds. Bondo, when you say at a minimum, do you mean there are other things that could be done that aren't really necessary? If it were yours what else would you change? I've thought about a cam change but I've heard the truck cams work ok in marine applications because theyre made for torque.

I drive through Andover on the way home from work. I might have to beg for a look at your swap to see how this goes.

If I decide to do this ( which I'm pretty sure I will) then it won't be until after the season ends, and I'll be sure to start a new thread with at least pics and maybe some videos. I'll be happy to show it to you in person too..

I keep thinking of things I'm forgetting... Will I need a mercathode? I've Seen them on big blocks but not small blocks.

I would want one on any boat I let sit in the water.....
