Hello guys. I am the guy who was driving to Kentucky to help out my elderly father service this motor. Remember, the Pontoon has not been out of the water in nine years, so the motor has never had the simpleist of maintenance performed on it (including oil, filters, plugs, impeller, lower unit oil) YES, this was all original to the boat.
Dad purchased the Bennington Pontoon new from a dealer (who has closed) with the Honda Motor, and of course, they promised him service for life!!! Fact is, the nearest Honda Dealership near him is 100 miles away. So, guess who was elected?????
We borrowed a trailer and hauled this thing out of the water for the first time in nine years. The old people got busy with scrapers, and I got busy withe the motor.
UNBELIEVABLE!! Popped off the hood. Look brand new. Changed the filthy Oil and Filter (simple job) and fuel filter first. Then, I moved to the NGK plugs.
I drained the perfect-colored lower unit fluid and replaced it. Dropped the lower unit and sevicrd the severely deformed impeller. WOW, it was really bad, but we caught it in time.
Here was my headache. I was not aware the prop will actually ratchette while it is in forward gear! This is so new to me, and I reallty fought it. I though I may have pulled something out of the clutch dog while dropping the unit. Finally, I did sme research here on IBoats, and solved the problem.
I am totally impressed with the little Honda Motor (BF 40) It had better run well, because there are no local dealers around!
