Damage on Keel. Advice appreciated...

I just acquired a 1979 Carl Craft 37' houseboat. This was given to me for nothing but it will be an almost full restoration project. One of the first things I want to tackle is this deep damage to the keel. What would be the best approach to fixing this? I do not have extensive experience repairing boats/hulls but I am very capable.... Any advice would be appreciated!!

Wow you are not going to like this answer. Gut the inside taper inside and out. Glass goes on both sides. Outer grind to perfection fair and gel coat. Replace inside wood and glass it.

Now the real ugly. Once inside how much water intrusion and what did that damage. Opening a whole other can of worms.

Thanks for the response! How far back should the wood come out on the inside? Just piece out the damage or remove the whole span? Surprisingly, there is not extensive intrusion damage. At least none that I can see at this point... This boat has been out of the water for a couple years and I am still in the initial stages of investigation, though.

Wish I could find a houseboat like that. You'll get it back on the water with a little work :joyous:
 Okay what Chevymaher says, others will chime in soon.

Document what you have / had to take out and keep measurements.

Following along :pop2: :pop2:

Do you have access to this area from the inside? The Keel Board is critical to the hulls structural integrity. Pics of the Inside would be helpful if possible. If you have access then the repair is not that hard and we can easily explain the process and materials needed to get her Ship Shape!!!
