1959 Merc Mark 55 40 HP the roller bearing surface on the prop shaft and drive shaft have damage due to being run with rusty water instead of gear lube. Fortunatley the surfaces were just roughed up a little bit and not murdered. I have smoothed them with emory cloth and it seems acceptable. They are not perfect. there are still some small grooves and pits. A friend suggested that I braze over the shaft damage and machine it down. Replacement shafts are impossible to find. I have ordered all new bearings and seals. Has anybody ever repaired a shaft like this and succeeded?
