So I have a 2001 Mercury Sable I bought from my mother who bought it new. 110K and runs and drives like it was new. My mother is the proverbial little old lady when it comes to drving.

I go to start it up Sunday night to put it in the driveway and it cranks slowly once, then just clicks and crakles. Batt is good and charged. I just say whatever (more colorfully than is allowed here) and leave it on the street to look at in the daylight.

Monday I get home from work at 9:30am and look at it. Still just clicks. I check the batt connections, they're good and clean. Check all fuses and relays, good.

I'm about to pull the starter which is mounted on the 'front' of the engine/transaxle (side i.r.t. the engine, front i.r.t. the car).

My dad shows up and is playing with things as I'm getting ready to yank the starter. I already have the battery and battery tray out as it is required to get to the top bolt on the starter.

He is messing with the positive cable and it separates from the terminal in his hands. Cable is not corroded, just split from vibration I guess. So cool, that's the problem, new cable is all it needs.

I pull the cable from the starter and get a replacement. I'm happy. So I put the cable on the big lug on the starter solenoid (on the starter) and tighten. It's not getting snug. F. So I take off the rachet and reach down with my hand to see what's going on, and with my bare fingers I twist the nut, and it comes off, along with the positive post from the solenoid. F. F. F.

So now I get to pull the starter anyway. hooray. I have to say it was the easiest starter I've ever pulled, bolts were easily accesible and the thing is nice and light (perm magnet gear reduction).

The solenoid is detachable, so I start calling around. None of the big shops (pep boys, auto zone, advance, etc) have the solenoid, but are willing to sell me a new starter complete for $160. WTF? One guy says he has it (pep boys) for $10, but then luckily I catch him saying 'starter relay' and ask again if it's the solenoid. He says yes. I ask him what it looks like. He says a little black plastic box with blade connectors on it. I tell him that's not the solenoid. He tells me it is. I tell him it's not, the solenoid is metal, cyllindrical and has screw terminals on it. He says that's not what his computer says. I hung up on him. I was already aggrivated and now I have a moron telling me what I need in stead of the other way around. Dumba$s.

So finally, I call a little local shop in town, and lo and behold, they have a listing for the solenoid alone and can have it tomorrow by 11:00am (and knew what a solenoid was and even asked if it was mounted on the starter or remote). And he ordered it for me with just a phone call, no payment, no credit card. $40-somthing and said he would call me when it arrived tomorrow.

So I have a new favorite parts place. Conway auto in Tuckerton.

Wish me luck, that I don't break something else putting the starter back in Tomorrow.

You should buy a chevy! My '02 silverado just got its 4th safety recall yesterday. I might as well have the worn out at 62,000 miles steering shaft replaced while I'm there.

not sure why Ford is getting a bad rap here, and believe me I am not fan of theirs. But seriously, what little old lady drives a car 110k in 4 years???? Uuumm after 100k you have to expect little problems like this. It's the bad trannies at 40k, and blown motors at 50 that should upset you. Welcome to the life of a higher mileage vehicle. If you want perfect, they sell new Ford 500s for what, about 20k?

I'm glad I'm not married to an auto brand. I own 2 Fords, 3 Dodge's, 1 Chevy, and 1 Jeep. All have been pretty good vehicles. The best vehicle I've ever owned was a Ford and the worst vehicle I've ever owned was a Ford. Everything else falls somewhere in between.

I've owned 1 Audi, at least 5 GM, and three fords. Of all those the only one that left me stranded were the Audi and two of the fords. The Audi doesn't count because I bought it for $425 with a hole in one of the cylinders.

The Fords were starter related. If I had to complain, I would complain about the horrible brakes on my Expedition. It goes through rotors like crazy. I have been over the braking system and still don't understand why. Now I just look at it as maintenance. Other than that I have 140K on the expedition and it has been very reliable. It also has chronic problems with the #3 spark plug. It gets water in the hole and eventually shorts the plug. Again, this is annual maintenance..

I just bought a Suburban last year and am very impressed with it. I have over 21K on it and it has been to the dealer once. For a busted CD player. I think thats pretty good.

138,000 on my 99 FORD powerstroke and it's only been to the dealer to replace a water pump at 99000 miles (under warranty).

did the brakes at 125,000 miles.

Ford = First on Race Day :D :D

for the problem you had....I would say that could be expected from a car with that many miles. that's minor stuff!

Give me a Ford over GM any day of the week.

OMC, I hear ya about the recalls, but I tell you what, my '04 Toyota van has had about 6 recalls, but that's way better than the Pontiac van we traded in...had some major problems that shoulda been recalls but weren't...that's way worse. :)

I have only had two Fords, a Probe Gt (Mazda MX-6), and my 95 F150. Both have performed quite well, and have only required the normal maintenance that vehicles required. It sounds like your starter deal is a piece of cake, it could definately be worse...

Re: Damn Ford Motor Product

OK. I got it all fixed. Managed to not break anything else.

My mother is a little old lady that still commutes 110 miles a day to work (she's 59). That's where the miles came from.

OMC, I have a 2004 Silverado with the 5.3. 46,000mi on it so far. I love it. I got one recall notice for the tailgate cables. Squeaking 22mpg out of it and it runs perfect. I parked it now that I have the sable and the motorcycle (cbr1100xx) to get to work and back. I just use it on the weekends to keep the oil circulating. Just used it today as a matter of fact to pick up a new bathtub from home depot for my dad.

As I said, the car (sable) runs and drives like it was new. I was not really bashing ford, just making the obligatory poke since it's the car that broke down. I have the sable, a chrysler PT, and the Silverado, so I too have the big three covered, and all three that I currently own I'm happy with. It's 99% maintenance and 1% brand that gets you your reliability, as with anything else.

I also found a dead bird in the front air dam. Looked like it had been there for a while so I didn't pull it out, it was jammed waaaay in there. Just saw feathers and a leg. Tweet tweet.
