I have a 89 Johnson 25 hp, Long shaft. After running the motor, I get a Dark black liquid leaking from upper hole at the bottom of outdrive. The same one water comes out of. I just had motor serviced and they did change oil in lower drive. What could this be? Useually its water coming out from this hold when i have muffs on.

The dark black liquid is uaually the unburnt gas/oil mixture draining down thru the soot/carbon encrusted inner exhaust housing (hsg between powerhead and lower unit). Nothing to be concerned about.

To make sure, if the gearlube quality might be unknown or questionable, loosed (don't remove) the bottom large slotted drain screw on the lower unit to allow a slight bit of gearlube to escape, then compare it to what you're questioning.

Thanks. I did check the lower gear lube for comparison, and the gear lube is much lighter then the dark oil from the upper hole. Thanks again.
