Darn intermittent ignition problem!!!

I finally figure out how to troubleshoot my ignition problem and now it won't misbehave. 1989 5.7 Alpha One just clicks when turn the start switch when it's cold, every time. After 3-4 tries, the starter will engage. So I let it sit for a few days and get my test light hooked up to see if I have voltage at the starter solenoid when the switch is in start position, AND THE STARTER ENGAGES! This is making me crazy. When you want it to break, it works. When you want it to work, it breaks.

worked on many intermitent problems. Sometimes I would wire in a testlite permanently so the customer could see the results when it acts up. Wire in a testlite under the dash, and wait.....it'll act up.......

Had a 70 hp Johnson that had a dead spot in the starter next time this happens try unstead of turning the key 3 or 4 times. Try tapping the starter when you turn the key

hey gadoo, clean or replace the solenoid before it leaves you stuck.Sounds like the contactors inside are bad.
