With the use of computer technology. Data mining is becoming a larger and easier way to get information on just about anyone.
For example you can do a subject search on a search engine, and many topics, and forums are displayed in the search results. And This Is The World Wide Web!
Information about users can be attained, even pictures, address, and who knows what else.
For myself, I try not to disclose information about private things. I still choose to be a private individual. I was just wondering if anyone else is as concerned about their privacy on the world wide web?

Yes, but that doesn't meen I don't disclose it, I'm just careful of what and were.

On face book I'm very closed, there is too much control given to others once you start accepting invitations, so I like to keep that a little ambiguous.

I use a site called LinkedIn. It's like facebook but for professionals. I keep more information there but it's all work related.

It's important to know where in the wild wild web you are when you're inputting information. If you know and trust the site, it's not any worse than giving your credit card to a waiter.

Re: Data Mining

Here's a little story on this:

I was selling an ipod touch on kijiji.ca. I got a silly response from someone saying they would give me $2.00 for it. I responded with "re-read the ad, price is $200)

Then I got a nasty response with a bunch of expletives in it.

Well the persons name was on their 'properties' of their email. Within in a few minutes I was able to facebook the person, find out her home address (canada411 and city tax records) and know the names of her family members. (on face book)

I wrote her back in the tone of a parent, telling her what I know about her. (13 year old with a younger brother) strongly suggesting she should be careful who and how she talks to people on the internet. I 'hope' her parents monitor her account as I wrote it with them viewing in mind. I also hope I scared the crap out of her.

Kids seem to be less inhibited in putting all their information out there. She didn't have any security settings on her facebook account.

Re: Data Mining

That's a good example Paulspaddle. I grew up in the days where everyone thought big brother knew too much already. Nowadays these younger ones have no clue about how big the information highway is.

Last week a news cast on tv ran an article about the www and twitter, face book, etc. Here is a link they posted on the news cast. http://pleaserobme.com/

Re: Data Mining

That's a very good piece of information. ;) Thanks for sharing it over here. I always believed that the data sharing over the Internet is quite dangerous as there is a chance of identity theft. :( So, we got to be careful while sharing our information over the Internet.

You need to be careful with your information everywhere as it is trivial to get it into a computer and then to the internet. From there it can be bought, sold, and consolidated with other bits of data collected from here and there.

Google yourself sometime....you might be surprised at what you find....might even be surprised to see picture of your house on the Google street maps

Re: Data Mining

When I just put in my home number on google(no name just my number) search I found out in 5 minutes where my wife went to high school and the names of several of my relatives....Its crazy. I once accidently came across the names and address of every person who has died in my state for the past 50 years along with THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. No wonder we have so many fake Ids in the hands of fake people with this sort of data available to anyone...
