Just purchaced new LOWE Roughneck R1652VT Jon boat. Data plate says hp rating 35/50
Dealer stated 35 is for tiller and 50 in is with a center or side console. I do not understand the reasoning behind this, Will I be breaking Florida law by using a 40 or 50 horse tiller ? Like to keep it a tiller to keep deck room.
Is this higher rating requirement due to weight balance with a console ? H E L P ?

Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated !

hi phil, from Jax also. not Fla law Fed law. set by the coast guard. the reason is the torque of the engine. using a console is much easier to control than a tiller, the torque of a 50, could snatch it out of you hand, also the weight in the rear of the boat. by having the console you distributed the weight forward. and make the boat easier to plane with the 50. with a tiller controlled 35 with just you in the boat it is going to be next to impossible to plane the boat with out some kind of weight in the front. if you dont' want the center or side console, use the easy guide sticksteering, and remote control for the engine. you can run every thing from the front seat.. send me and email i'll send pictures of what i did to my 14 footer.

I prefer a tiller arm on smaller outboards .... you can always put a tiller arm stabiliser on, like tashasdaddy said, it could snatch it out of your hand, happened to me many times ... here is a pic of what it looks like .....

Sorry to jump in so late in this post but I've had 3 50 hp
tiller steer set ups.A 77 Merc 50,a 88 Evinrude 50,and a 65 merc 500.I understand what the coast guard is heading for but I've never had a lick of trouble handling
this set up.These were all on 18 ft Crestliner bare utilities.the 65 on a 56, and The 88 and 77 on a 77.
If you want the bigger motor set it up as required.
By the way I think any properly set up motor from 10 to 50 will plane easily with tiller steering. As kids we used to plane a 14 ft crestliner utility with a 10 hp and 2 of us 100 pounders on the rear seat. It wasn't easy but it would plane.

I just got my newly customised 85hp modified yamaha with tiller arm added on and put it on my 4.1 meter pencil inflatable (as in the pics above) and it handles perfect (and fast as hell) just for interest sake I get exactly 102 mph out of it at WOT ... with the tiller I have no problem with steering ... and loads of fun .....
