I am about to go and look at a boat that been sitting on dry dock for about 6 years, it has 2 DD 6v 92 with about 200 hours since overhaul, the owner began a restoration but could not finish for various reasons, the boat is out of the water, so at this point I will not be able to attempt to start them. What issues and problems could an engine sitting for that long could develop, and what should I look for ?Thanks for all the help.

Re: DD inspection

I'd be concerned about rust in any unprotected areas. Biggest concern is air intake paths and especially the cylinders. Also will need to be prelubed prior to startup and fuel will need to be replaced and primed throughout to get rid of the old stuff.

They could be fine, lots of stories that support getting lucky, but there are stories the other way as well. The right way is to have them thoroughly inspected by a factory trained tech. I used to sell brand new diesels that sat outside for years. Again, biggest issue was corrosion where air entered and traveled. Sometimes we pulled heads for cleanup prior to sale. These were 4 strokes (CAT), and I have no DD experience. But I literally did stay at a Holiday Inn last night . . . :)
