hello this is my first time posting but im on here all the time. right now i need some help with my 54 7.5 fleetwin. i had it out a couple of days ago and while running the river the water pump quit. the motor bogged down and i shut it off and noticed it was hot. well i changed the impellar and it would only run 1/2 throttle. checked plugs and coils and they look good. did a compression check today and 60 on one cylinder but 0 on the other. so is my motor just spare parts now?

60 and 0? recheck with another guage before you give up on it. check spark also. hopefully the overheat didnt do much else than a blown headgasket. (those old motors can and will take abuse if they are oiled properly.....and a head gasket is real cheap, just search the torque specs and sequence before you replace it!)

i only have one gauge to check with but it is new and i checked it about 4 times. so you say its probably just a blown head gasket?

I concur. I'd pull the head off and take a look. That's usually what it is and they are less than $20 I believe. Be very careful not to break any head bolts though. If they offer any resistance at all I use a propane torch and heat em up so as not to break em. They break pretty easy.

.....when you order your parts, i can assume you are going to get a new impeller also? (and do a search on refacing the head, its easy dyi stuff, and will possibly save you some "wtf" issues!)

Good point. You gotta fix the impeller also. And they suck on the 7.5's as you have to remove the powerhead to get to the shift linkage.

you just need a very flat surface......a piece of glass is best, put a sheet of 600 grit (other posters feel free to correct plz)put the sandpaper on the glass and do a figure 8 pattern with the head, look at it often, you will quickily see if /when its flat by the shiny areas as compared to the not. just dont over do it.

You will be there all day trying to accomplish anything meaningful with 600 grit. Drop down to 220 at least.

But think of how smooth it will be!
