I just picked up my new Yamaha 9.9 Four stroke. I was surprised to see the dealer get it "ready" by running it with the "ear muffs" on and at full throttle with it in gear. Is this engine screwed up now. I wasn't under load in water.

Is this a very bad thing, or do you think the engine will be fine.

if it was getting water , few sec does not heart it but it is not good for it . it is like taking off in a car and amoking the tires.

The engine has a rev limiter so its not going to over rev but it would have been better to have used a tank for that small of engine.

I also just installed a 9.9highthrust 4 st and the manual said for the first hour run the engine under load in gear at approx 2000 rpms, second hour 3000 rpms.
I am glad i did'nt get mine from that dealer.

john-- good luck with it.

I highly doubt that any dealer on Planet Earth would rev a brand new engine to full throttle on muffs. Nobody's that stupid. It probably just sounded that way because of the exhaust sound, not being muffled underwater.

I bet the dealer WAS five star certified.
a certification a one eyed monky could pass in 45 min.took me 20.
however, look for your dealers school certifications. Yamaha gives a gold sticker to place on the diploma for each couse a tech passes.
I got more of them stupid stickers than I can place.
however I am a school hound.
they did give me a killer shirt and hat though :).WOT with no prop load is not real good, however I doubt any engine damage did occur.
