Dealer says "it's a painted SS Prop"

Okay, so this is my first 4 cycle 115 hp Yamaha outboard and I wanted a stainless steel prop. I look at the prop and it is painted an off white, almost cream. I say to the boat dealer, I want a stainless steel prop. He says it is a stainless steel prop. I say it's painted. He says we paint the 115 prop with a "powder paint" or something like that. I look at the boats with 200hp Yamaha engines and they are all SS, unpainted. Qestion: How do I tell if it is really a SS prop?

Don't know why a Dealer would paint a stainless prop.Did he give you a reason?

At anyrate, remove it and say you want an aluminum prop. The 'painted' SS will be much heavier.

There are shiny SS props, dull SS props, and painted SS props. The dealer didn't paint it. Some come that way, tho the one's I've seen are satin black. But there are lotsa SS props out there by lotsa manufacturers. Powder paint is applied electrostatically and baked.

Yamaha has two painted props to my knowledge...the black one is actually called the 'Black Steel' series, while the only white props I know of are 'high thrust' for pontoons and such....we have gotten a couple of 18 ft. boats with 115's on 'em with these white props lately....worked well, obviously chosen by manufacturer as right prop for that load, etc....should be aluminum though

A magnet will not stick to 100% stainless steel.

A magnet wont stick to aluminum either lol. pretty much there are only 2 ways to find out if it is stainless, first you could go thru the effort to buff off the paint, next take some sand paper to an unimportant area such as inside the exhaust hub or somethin andd see how easy it is to scratch the prop, true stainless steel is very strong and wont show much of anything quickly. the other way you can find out real quick is run your boat in shallow water, after hitting a couple rocks trim the motor up and see what the prop looks like, if it looks like a grizzly bear used it as a toothpick its not stainless if its got a couple dents and dings its stainless.

Better yet you could ask another dealer what the weight difference would be between 2 similarly pitched props, one being alum, the other stainless, weigh your prop and that will tell you everything you need to know very quickly.

Now the real question is did you get charged for a stainless prop? if you didnt i really wouldnt worry to much about it as alum works just peachy in most situations and weighs less to boot.

Wouldn't there be a unique part number on the prop that would identify it?
