I am replacing all the decals on my 65 merc and i have read that laquer thinner will remove the adhesive and the decal will come off, i just want to make sure that its not going to damage the chrome finish. Any other ideas that are good for removal?

This is a safe alternative to using solvants , works bettter on an air grinder but a regular electric drill should be enough
Vinyl Eraser And Arbor

I dunno .. 3500-4000 rpm on a tool against your paint does not sound very safe to me. A regular drill isnt even close to 3700 rpm.

If it were gel then yea go for it .. but Paint on a plastic cover .. I dunno .. I would be Very careful to choose this.

I have used the high priced 3m Vinyl Eraser on a buffer for Boat stripes and it worked Very Very well and fast ( about 50 bucks a pop but it cut down hours of time ).

I would never use it for a paint job personally. Though Im sure some have done it without an issue.

Thanks bomber, i like that idea better than the solvants.

Try some careful and slow peeling first. Most the times the glue will come off with the sticker.

3m or mineral sprites might be best for the rest of the adhesive thats still on your cowling.

Windex or window cleaner is what some use to prep the surface clean before your new stickies are applied.

If you use the Eraser .. please tell us how it worked out for ya :) .

I like heat guns and sticker remover spray (both at autoparts store) I got my heat gun for $15.

Even a hair dryer gun will work with stickers. Its not like your peeling varnish off a toe rail.

Sticker removal can be a slow methodical process .. Sometimes there is nothing Fast about removing stickers/stripes that does not damage.

Patience is key sometimes ..

Truth. I just had to take some 20+ year old stickers off my hull and I think it took me two days on and off.

Re: decal romaval

The decal erasers are used ALL the time to remove pinstripes from automobiles. That's exactly what they are designed for. As with anything, improper use can and usually does cause issues. For large vinyl decals, I personally believe that the heat and peel method, while tedious and time consuming, is prolly the best method. And to specifically answer your question, NO Lacquer thinner will not damage the chrome unless left standing on it for a LONG period of time and I do not think it would be of much use in removing the decals but it's good for cleaning off the sticky residue left behind after you peel em off.

Here's what other iBoats members have to say about the topic...

Heat a stiff scraper to get under the edge and lift the sticker and some goo gone to remove the residue.

Re: decal romaval

I really appreciate all the ideas to remove the decals but i must not have been clear on what surface the decals are coming off of. I am trying to remove the decals from the metal chrome faceplate. I have had the decals soaking in mineral spirits for about 15 hours and they are no softer than before i started soaking them. I tried scraping with a new razor blade and got nowhere. Since the piece is metal what about heating with a small torch just enough to melt the sticker and scraping with a razor? Anybody tried doing that?

I wouldn't do it, a torch has a chance of discoloring the surface. You shouldn't need that much heat to remove the decal, try a heat gun first. Got a photo of this part? Are you 100% sure it's a decal and not some type of paint applied in such a way that it looks like a decal? A heat gun should get it pliable enough to be removed.

i used a torch on mine, but just a second, then pull away, it softened the vinyl so it would peel off in 1 piece, otherwise they would come off in little flakes and was takeing forever, not hot enough to melt the sticker, just soften it

I tried the heat method on my older pin stripping on the Carlson, but they were too far gone. i got the 3m pin stripe remover wheel and it looks to be doing a good job.

Re: decal romaval

I am positive that it is a decal and not paint. Some of the decal has already started peeling off but the rest of it is on there really good. These are original decals from 1965. I will try and post a pic of the part but im not able to edit my profile yet. I need more posts first i think or maybe i just cant figure it out.

Heat gun it .. hair dryer .. pic it off in pieces ..

Long time to do this .. you will burn your paint in the radi where the stickers were at if you try a 4k rpm tool IMHO.

Some paint stripper will take that decal off of that chrome.

Go to a sign shop!

We have lots of different products that are water based and great for removing decals and adhesive. Bring the part in question with you if you can and they should be able to help. You don't need that much solution but it will take some heat, elbow grease and time to get it off depending on the size decal you are trying to take off.

You ever try to take off a chipped or straked metallic stripe .. it will take hours and hours ( days ).

Some of the worst are thin stripes .. they dont come off with a heat gun.

Sometimes the cold works better for you depending on what your taking off. If the Glue is on the surface then you have to get the graphics off first.

Paint is a touchy subject with high speed removers.. gelcoat yea goto town carefully ..
