anybody know where to get replacement decals for 1976 merc 20hp?
I can find lots of reproduction decals for classic restoration projects, but cant seem to find any for my "not so classic" motor.

Re: Decals

I've looked all over for my '74 9.8, but no luck. I've contacted several outfits that specialize in old parts, but none had them or could suggest anyone. There was a guy who had some old stock but was out (of all of them) by the time I contacted him. Maybe someone will be able to help you (and I'll be watching - maybe find some for my 9.8!).

I have found two local shops that feel they can duplicate the decals for around $70, which is probably the way I'll go if I decide (1) to repaint the cowling and (2) to try to match the original look.

My new idea is just to find some current Merc decals for an engine of approximately the same size and cut them to fit my cowling, probably remove or replace (via the custom decal shop) any HP digits if they aren't accurate. I am not "married" to the idea of making my old engine authentically restored, and frankly like the newer red graphics over the blue graphics of my '74.

Re: Decals

I doubt anyone is reproducing those decals - too new for the vintage crowd and too old for the dealer types.

However, I would recommend going with the idea of having new ones made up at a sign shop. The cost is in the redesigning, so I'd have them knock off four or five sets once everything is set up, then you might be able to recover your investment by selling off the extras. I wouldn't make too many sets as demand is probably relatively low (could be wrong) but I think you could probably sell a few on eBay, etc. If you did find that there was a demand for them you could have the sign shop make a few more as they'd already have the hard part done...

- Scott

Re: Decals

Please look here http://cutnupvinyl.com/_wsn/page3.html
He maks OMC decals but may make you your merc decals. Just take a photo and have the size of the decals needed and he will remake them . He just did me a set of 1991 Evinrude 20 hp replacements. They do not have the blue background but wht a new painted blue hood the decals will look great and you will have to look clost to see there is no blue background decal behind the silver. I have not received them yet as they are still in the mail but have seen photos of the decals coming and they look great
